Fishing Report, Great Summer action on the Fort Lauderdale Fishing boats

Great Summer action on the Fort Lauderdale Fishing boats

The fishing in Fort Lauderdale has been awesome this summer. The kingfish action on the reefs is red hot. Big kingfish, 12-20 pounds have been biting, along with many of their smaller mackerel relatives. The bonitos have been around in fierce numbers as well. On average, we’re catching 10-15 bonitos and kingfish per trip. This is perhaps our best time of year for catching lots of fish on our trips. Head offshore and look for dolphin and you just may find a huge school of 20-30 fish in it. Most of the dolphin are smaller sized, around 3-5 pounds, but they’re out there.

Wreck fishing in the Ft. Lauderdale area has been very productive as well. As soon as the bait gets to the bottom, it is usually devoured by some large game fish. Golden amberjacks have been biting great, as have the larger barracuda. Some big sharks are hanging around the wrecks lately too, so make sure you use steel leader material. Occasionally, a big grouper or mutton snapper will grab the bait. It isn’t often you can get to the bottom without a big amberjack grabbing the bait first though.

As if all that wasn’t enough action for us these days, there have been a variety of other fish biting out there lately as well. We’ve come home with a couple big cobia lately, caught either kite fishing or wreck dropping. An occasional sailfish has been caught and released out there lately as well. We’ve had a couple trips this week already where we’ve seen or caught a sailfish. It is pretty late in the season for them, but it’s good to see them here late. Big game sharks still biting a bit out there, and the occasional wahoo or tuna. It’s been a smorgasbord of big game fishing in Fort Lauderdale lately.

You can expect to see a lot more action biting on the reefs for the next month and a half. August should be just as eventful as July has been for us, with even more bonitos and kingfish action. Smaller mahi-mahi will quickly grow up to larger sized mahi-mahi and should be getting bigger very soon. This is a great time of year to go fishing, so if you would like to book a Fort Lauderdale fishing trip, call Capt. Andy at (754)214-7863
